One day in 1861, rancher John Singer ( of the sewing machine family) buried about $100,000 in cash along with some
family jewels in a fruit jar under a tree on his ranch. He buried it so
that it wouldn't fall into Confederate hands as he headed north where
his sympathies were.
After the war; he returned to find
that his ranch and tree were obliterated by a hurricane. The jar has never been found. It's too late to
hunt for it now, but many other treasures abound in this sparkling city by
the sea.
A treat this season is a visit to the
Texas State Aquarium, where the variety of fascinating marine habitat
exhibits bring you close-up views of the wonderful Gulf of Mexico. The nearby USS Lexington offers a sensational opportunity to see an exciting IMAX movie of the war and a fully guided tour of this great ship. |

First Day: Depart the Rio Grande Valley this morning aboard
your sightseeing motorcoach for Kingsville. Say "Howdy" to Harlingen

Then visit the leather shop before driving over to the world famous King Ranch, originally named the Santa Gertrudis. After visiting the grounds, chow down at a big barbecue lunch served in the bunkhouse.
Then on to the sparkling city by the sea, where your motorcoach will take
you high over the Harbor Bridge to the Texas State Aquarium.
This is South Texas' newest attraction, and you're sure to like it.
Afterwards, visit the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, the venerable
World War II battlewagon now retired to a berth with a grand view of the
harbor. Your visit to the ship includes an exciting IMAX movie, too. Then check into the elegant Omni Hotel with rooms
overlooking the bay. Refreshments are waiting. This evening, the Flagship, a triple decker
