Only a short distance south is the region of the Huastec Indians, a colorful, brightly-dressed group who still follow their ancient customs and live as their ancestors did thousands of years ago. Tampico and Cd. Valles are important cities in the "Huasteca," as the area is known. Come with us in an exciting adventure trip, where you will see the stone remnants of their past and how they still carry on their old traditions.
First Day: After leaving the Rio Grande Valley through Reynosa, you'll pass through the Tropic of Cancer to the Tampico Tropics. This bustling city provides fascinating scenes of buildings with lacy wrought-iron balconies. After your welcome cocktail at the Hotel Holiday Inn Plaza de Armas there's plenty to see at the Plaza de la Libertad and the nearby Plaza de Armas.
Second
Day: Ships
from round the world are moored only a few city blocks from your hotel.
Begin your Tampico tour by seeing the docks and imposing Maritime
Customs House, its elegance contrasting strongly with the
rough-and-tumble port atmosphere. Visit the Museum of Huastec Culture and Tampico's well known Pyramid of Las Flores to learn of the
people that lived here before, and ride a streetcar or a boat on the Carpenter's
Lagoon to see some of the sites of Tampico. Head west toward Valles, stopping at the amazing stone ruins of El Consuelo, near Tamuín. Only a short distance away believed to be astronomy observed the
stars here by means of a reflecting pool. See excellent Lariab Museum at Taninul, where you can sit in a scale model of the stars as seen
by the Huastec astronomers, and a second great museum of the Huastec culture in Valles' exhibiting clothing, musical instruments, and
articles of daily life. Your hotel will be the Hotel Valles in Valles for the next two nights. If you desire, there's time for a swim
in your hotel's olympic size pool which is surrounded by beautiful Royal
Palms.
Breakfast, Lunch Included.
Third Day: Following winding roads
through lush, tropical jungle, visit an authentic Huastec Indian market Here women wear their traditional costumes daily: bright
embroidered shawls with matching bags, black skirts fastened with colorful
belts and headdresses formed of bright orange, magenta and green skeins of
yam. A small store across the street from the Plaza sells typical clothes
and musical instruments of the Huastecs. Continuing to Xilitla you'll see the incredible surrealistic mansion and constructions of Sir
Edward James, the eccentric wealthy Englishman, supposedly the grandson of
Queen Victoria. Strange art forms will intrigue and interest you.
Returning to Valles, you'll have a lot to discuss with your fellow
travelers.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Included.
Fourth Day: Returning over the Tamaulipaas Mountain range, you'll see many pretty
scenes as you journey toward Soto La Marina. You'll arrive back in the Rio Grande
Valley about 5:30 PM.
Breakfast Included. |
