USAA Auto Insurance Drivers: Insure Your Vehicle When Crossing the U.S./Mexico Border

Mexican government requires that all motorists have liability insurance when driving in Mexico. This is for both tourists and residents. Your USAA auto policy may provide limited coverage for any loss or damage that occurs during infrequent trips within a certain distance from the US-Mexico border (Check your policy for details), however, it does not provide you with the mandatory liability coverage required for all motorists and you could be liable for any damages that you cause.

If you plan to drive beyond the border zone (approximately 12 miles from the border), you will need the mandatory Temporary Vehicle Importation Permitto drive a U.S. registered vehicle. You do not need a vehicle importation permit if you are visiting the border zone, Baja, or Sonora “Free Zone”.

If you are a U.S. Diplomat, you will be able to insure your vehicle prior to completing the accreditation and receiving your new diplomatic plates. If you have additional questions, please contact your USAA-Authorized agent, Sanborn’s Mexico Insurance at 800-442-7286
