Yuma Arizona Drivers: Insure Your Vehicle When Crossing the U.S./Mexico Border
Yuma rests in the southwest of Arizona and has the most sun year-round in the entire U.S. It’s a booming city for agriculture, military bases and tourism with great weather and a historical downtown. There’s no wonder as to why the weather is so agreeable when considering Yuma’s proximity to the U.S-Mexico border. Only 7 miles away, it’s an easy drive down to Mexico. The trip takes more planning than you might think, however. Even by land you must meet certain requirements to travel to Mexico. This includes car insurance.
Visiting Mexico from Yuma, Arizona
The border town closest to Yuma is Los Algodones in Baja California, west of Yuma and San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora south of Yuma. Both towns town often see medical residents from the US and Canada and offer comparatively cheap medical and dental care. While Algodones, Mexico is so close to Yuma, you will likely cross the border at Andrade, California to visit Baja California—or Los Algodones. You can take I-8 west and exit at Andrade and travel south for two miles. If you’d like to travel to San Luis Rio, Colorado, travel from downtown Yuma along US 85 south. Be sure to carry your passport and a valid driver’s license for the return trip.
Will My Car Insurance Carry Over into Mexico?
Mexico
does not accept foreign auto insurance. Even if your US domestic auto insurance has a Mexico insurance endorsement, covering physical damage 25 miles into Mexico, you will still need liability coverage. These endorsements are for infrequent trips, and insurance companies might not cover you if you cross the border more than once a month. Remember to ask your domestic insurance agent to confirm. To drive legally in Mexico, protect your family and avoid fines you must have
