If you’re planning on taking your RV or motorhome to Baja Mexico for vacation, you’ll need to plan accordingly. Here are some things you need to bring with you when traveling to Mexico by RV or motorhome:
- Passport and ID
- Tourist Permit
- RV Title/Registration
- Valid Credit Card with the name of the RV driver
If you’re just traveling to Baja Mexico, you won’t need a vehicle importation permit for your RV. You will need one if you drive further into Mexico, however. No matter where you go within Mexico, you’ll need Mexican RV insurance.
Does My RV Insurance Carry into Baja Mexico?
Despite its proximity to the U.S. border, Baja Mexico is still technically Mexico and thus doesn’t accept American insurance. This includes RV Insurance. If you want to drive your motorhome across the border, you’ll need Mexican RV insurance even if only for a day.
Can You Get Mexican Car Insurance for an RV?
There is available for visitors. These policies typically cover:
- Liability. Third party liability is required in Mexico with a limit of $500,000 to provide compensation for injury or property damage you may cause other people.
- Medical Expenses. Medical expenses help cover the cost of medical expenses caused by an accident.
- Physical Damage. Physical damage coverage combines collision and comprehensive coverage to protect against damages due to collisions and environmental damage such as fire or windstorms.
- Theft. You can purchase either partial or full theft and vandalism coverage.
- Excess Liability. Excess liability is useful in the unfortunate case that a crash with another car results in the other driver’s or passenger’s death.
If your motorhome has a separate vehicle and trailer, both must carry equal amount of insurance for the duration of your stay in Mexico.
